The purpose of RFID technology has changed a lot since its inception. In its earliest days, RFID was used as a tool of espionage during the Cold War. The Soviet government used it as a covert listening device that retransmitted radio waves with audio information.
Today, RFID is known less for its eavesdropping ability, and more as a way to add efficiency to some of the world's largest and most sophisticated supply chains. This strength is a key reason why, in 2004, the United States Department of Defense (DoD) signed a memorandum outlining a policy for its use. The DoD looked to the technology to play a key role in its broad Automatic Identification Technology (AIT) strategy, which is designed to help the organization more quickly and easily track and record shipment data, as well as the actual shipments themselves.
