The Challenge:
During the manufacturing process, LII operators used to fill out check lists verifying through a visual inspection that all the correct components had been installed. However, as many parts look identical but have different performance properties, there was the potential for the incorrect component to be installed.

If an incorrect component was detected at the functional run test station, each unit on the assembly line had to be rechecked as there could have been several dozen units built between the point where the incorrect component was included and where it was detected.
