For something so white, sugar certainly has a colorful history. Brought to Europe from India by Alexander the Great in 325 B.C., the processed juice from the sugar cane eventually made its way to the New World, courtesy of Christopher Columbus.

Ask any modern New Worlder in possession of a sweet tooth: Which brand of sugar sits in the kitchen canister? The answer likely will be C&H. (You might even get a rendition of the jingle, a happy tune about the purity, freshness and cleanness of the sun-soaked Hawaiian commodity.)

C&H Sugar, which turns 100 in 2006, processes more than 700,000 tons of sugar each year in its Crockett, Calif., refinery and distribution center. Its high-speed equipment can produce close to a million pink-and-white bags of sugar per day.
