Case Study: Furlani's Food Corporation Uses Real-Time Traceability To Track Product And Reduce Costs

Garlic usually leaves a trace, but not strong enough to satisfy the complex requirements of Furlani's Food Corp., a producer of chopped garlic, spreads, breadsticks and garlic bread with retail and restaurant customers throughout Canada and the U.S. Headquartered in suburban Toronto, Furlani's must meet Canadian and U.S. food safety, traceability, customs and security requirements to bring its products to market. Satisfying the U.S. Bioterrorism Act, new customs requirements and new customers forced Furlani's to come up with a new recipe for tracking its products. That new recipe includes: RF Express™ for MFG/PRO, automated data collection system from Eagle Consulting and Development; MobileLAN™ WA22 from Intermec; and Furlani's enterprise solution, QAD MFG/PRO. This powerful combination gave Furlani's the supply chain traceability it requires, plus improved operational productivity that supports the growing business.

"In the food industry, if you don't have stock visibility, lot traceability or an efficient recall program, you will be operationally challenged," said Rod Rego, Furlani's director of finance and special projects. "We have three government agencies and two regulatory agencies, plus major retail customers telling us ‘You need to track lots and perform recalls online.' Our real-time data collection system gives us the lot traceability we need and helps get our products to customers fresh and in a secure manner."
