Mandate Provides Increased Efficiency And Information Accuracy
February 3, 2011
The United States Postal Service (USPS) has developed the new Intelligent Mail bar code for increased information tracking in a bar code that takes up less space. By using several different types of bars (full, tracker, ascender and descender) the Intelligent Mail bar code offers the greatest overall data capacity as compared to existing mailing bar codes. The new Intelligent Mail bar code system is required by May 2011 in order to continue to receive the bulk mail postal discount.
Efficiency: Tracking and Identification of Packages Made Easy
Using the new Intelligent Mail bar code, direct mail houses are able to embed more information in the bar code and track up to one billion mail pieces per mailing. In addition, the increased information contained in the bar code enables more precise tracking of mail pieces throughout the mailing process. And, the bar code is so small (see below) that there is more room for the design of the mailing.
Availability
Intelligent Mail bar code capabilities are available now. Those customers using the Printronix P7000, T5000r, T4M, SL5000r and SL4M and/or the TallyGenicom 6200 and 6300 printers can receive Intelligent Mail bar code capabilities through a standard firmware update.
