The U.S. Open represents golf at the highest level and is considered by many to be the most difficult tournament to win. Just to enter, players must produce under pressure during weeks of qualifying tournaments. Winning requires sustained excellence and a mistake-free performance under relentless pressure. The United States Golf Association (USGA), which runs the U.S. Open, holds its partners and vendors to the same standards of excellence and performance as the golfers who vie for the tournament title. Naturally, Intermec is the only handheld computer maker to make the cut.
Tournament staff at the 102nd U.S. Open held June 13-16 at the Bethpage (NY) State Park Black Course used Intermec® 710 wireless handheld computers and 2101 access points to power a set of sophisticated scorekeeping and event management applications developed by Unisys. Each shot taken during the four-day tournament was recorded first on the 710s, which updated the leader board, press center, television networks, Web sites and other outlets within seconds via the wireless network and the Unisys scoring management system.
