DatStat's Illume Next Streamlines Data Collection And Improves Participant Engagement For Health Researchers Across Globe

Next generation of software enables researchers to scale and improve quality of health studies, registries and clinical trials

Today DatStat Inc. announced the release of Illume Next, the next generation of its enterprise software designed to simplify the lives of health researchers and clinicians. DatStat’s survey-based data collection and study automation platform, with its enhanced features, is mobile friendly, supports online or offline data capture, and automates complex studies to dramatically improve recruitment, study management and retention of participants. DatStat offers a turn-key software solution to research groups that need more than a simplistic survey tool to run their long term research projects.

“Research studies are growing in scale and complexity while at the same time budgets are shrinking,” said Lizza Miller, PH.D, co-founder and CEO, DatStat Inc. “Illume Next simplifies the lives of researchers and enables them to do more with less by automating data collection and other manual processes. Now researchers can focus on analyzing data to find cures and treatments, not tracking study participants and fragmented data sets.”

Illume Next builds upon DatStat’s existing technology which is currently being used in a diversity of studies such as global health, clinical interventions, mental health research, and to collect patient reported outcomes. Using this new technology, researchers can automate their study and improve participant engagement, which results in easier recruitment and retention. Features such as mobile friendly design, triggered emails and text communication, online and offline data collection, and integration with other technologies such as Apple’s ResearchKit, enable researchers to reach a wider population, collect more data at a higher quality, and efficiently manage their study.

The COPD Foundation’s Patient-Powered Research Network is using Illume Next to achieve a goal of connecting 75,000 individuals diagnosed with or at risk for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) with clinical researchers by building a registry. Through a patient portal, registry members provide consent, participate in research surveys, and view personalized educational resources from the COPD Foundation to help them better understand and manage their disease.

“We are utilizing the power of patients to build a large scale registry that is designed to speed recruitment for clinical trials and development of new therapies for COPD. Datstat provides us with a scalable and flexible technology platform that will serve as the foundation of our landmark initiative.” said John W. Walsh, President of the COPD Foundation. “We are especially pleased with the COPD PPRN portal which provides an engaging user experience on desktop and mobile devices. Our next step is to work with DatStat to integrate with Apple’s ResearchKit which will allow us to scale even faster.”

DatStat also works with customers across the globe to enable data collection in areas with no internet connection. In one notable project in southern Africa, community health workers are utilizing Illume Next ready tablets enabled with GPS and barcode readers to collect data offline for over two dozen study sites focused on community-wide HIV prevention. Once internet connection is restored, data seamlessly uploads to a centralized database for final analysis by teams in Seattle and London. Instead of waiting months to see how the study is progressing, these remote analysis teams can see exactly how their study is developing in real-time allowing them to make adjustments if needed.
