These experts point to big growth in government and pharmaceutical verticals and provide keys to your success.
Let’s get this out of the way: RFID (radio frequency identification) is not going to replace bar codes any time soon. In fact, despite RFID’s impressive tracking capabilities, 2-D bar code scanning is still a growing business in some markets and will continue to be for a number of years. VARs intent on taking advantage of this technology need only to look to where handheld computer/bar code scanner experts are pointing.
Get Involved With The Government’s 2-D Bar Code Initiatives
Robert Hossary, VP Americas at CipherLab, believes that one of the best 2-D bar code business opportunities for VARs is in the government vertical, specifically with the DoD and its Unique Identification (UID) program. The UID program mandates that DoD suppliers apply 2-D bar codes (that represent a Unique Item Identifier [UII]) to any items meeting a certain criteria (e.g. items over $5,000 in value, items that are considered mission-critical, or items that are part of controlled inventory). “About 500 suppliers to the DoD have achieved UID compliance, but there are still over 20,000 suppliers that need to,” says Hossary. “More than half a million items already have been recorded. According to AIM [an association committed to the growth of auto ID technologies], there are over 97 million items remaining.”
