Bar Code Scanner: NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital Signs To Adopt IntelliDOT Patient Care System

IntelliDOT Corporation recently announced an agreement to deploy its innovative CAREt patient safety system at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. The initiative includes an ongoing relationship, called the Thought Leader Collaboration Program, aimed at enhancing IntelliDOT tools with new concepts to better provide patient information and match patient with medication at the bedside in the Hospital's 2,335-bed facility and nationally.

IntelliDOT is a leading provider of innovative patient safety and workflow management solutions to the healthcare industry.

One of the most comprehensive and respected university hospitals in the world, and recently ranked #6 on the Honor Roll of the best hospitals in America by U.S. News & World Report, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital is the largest not-for-profit, nonsectarian hospital in the U.S.

As part of the agreement, IntelliDOT will implement its CAREt point-of-care barcode scanner system throughout NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, including its five major medical centers: NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center, Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of NewYork-Presbyterian, NewYork-Presbyterian/Allen Pavilion and NewYork-Presbyterian/Westchester Division.

Proven Patient Safety System

"NewYork-Presbyterian has a longstanding commitment to using technology to enhance care and better serve our patients. It is our hope that this project, in which we work together with IntelliDOT to further our mutual interest in enhancing patient care, can serve as a model for hospitals across the country," said Robert E. Kelly, M.D., Chief Medical Officer, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center.

"NewYork-Presbyterian and IntelliDOT will work together to add features to our CAREt system and introduce new ways to prevent medication and other errors," explained IntelliDOT co-founder and medication safety expert David D. Swenson, RPh, a former hospital pharmacist.

"We are honored and excited about working with such an eminent and world-renowned healthcare organization," added Robert N. Williamsen, IntelliDOT's Vice President of Sales.

"We look forward to realizing significant benefits from this unique arrangement as we introduce this innovative technology over the next 18 months," said Aurelia G. Boyer, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and NewYork-Presbyterian Healthcare System.

About IntelliDOT
The IntelliDOT mission is to help hospitals and other healthcare institutions reduce medication and other errors at the point of care while greatly enhancing efficiency. User-designed-and-defined, the system also helps improve care quality and streamline workflows in a manner that complements and enhances the way clinicians currently work.

The CAREt System is a comprehensive, easily integrated approach to medication administration safety, specimen and vital sign collection, blood product administration safety and documentation along with enhancing the safety of newborns by ensuring a mother's breast milk is correctly matched and accurately given to her baby. Taking advantage of usability lessons learned from early systems, IntelliDOT has crafted an exceptionally clinician-friendly system that represents a major advance over competing products. Implementation of this cost-effective "smart hardware" system is quick, efficient and painless, and hospitals are generally "fully house wide" in five to six months from contract signing.

The System uses a custom-designed portable wireless-computing device, the CAREt Handheld, that features a straightforward user interface. IntelliDOT's sophisticated yet flexible software is able to seamlessly access important patient information from any existing hospital information system and instantly distill this ADT (admission/discharge/transfer) data, pharmacy orders, lab, blood bank and other vital data into clear, easy-to-digest information. Nurses and other authorized caregivers can quickly and easily access this real-time information -- organized to fit a hospital's own unique work-flow processes -- at the bedside, as needed. The CAREt System further enhances now-conventional barcode-labeled medications with the supplement of small "DOTs" -- information-rich 2-D barcodes that add value by enabling hospitals and other healthcare organizations to facilitate quick, accurate, point-of-care documentation customized to their facility's requirements.
