Patient Identification Uses SkyeTek RFID Reader

Precision Dynamics Corporation (PDC)™ owns a 78 percent share of the U.S. domestic plastic wristband market, which includes multiple means of identification (bar code, RFID etc.). PDC introduced the first bar code wristband for patient identification in 1984. They began incorporating RFID into their wristbands in 2000. PDC views HF RFID as a bar code replacement in the long term, and the best solution for patient tracking and risk mitigation within the healthcare market. PDC's primary vertical markets are healthcare and patron management.

Requirements:

  • Ability to incorporate RFID and bar code functionality in a small form-factor.
  • An "application board" to deliver PDC's IP and provide host interfaces.
  • Extended RFID read ranges.
  • Need for a complete turnkey solutions, including design engineering, test, regulatory compliance and manufacturing.

Solution:

  • SkyeTek™ developed a base design for a combination RFID/Bar code Reader.
  • Platform integration of SkyeTek's M1 SkyeModule with a 3-D bar code scan engine.
  • Development of an application module containing host interfaces and co-resident application space for PDC's business logic.
  • Creation of a "wedge" interface which adapted the platform logic to enable the use of keyboard (legacy) systems.
  • Antenna design to optimize RFID read range / performance of the RFID/Bar code combo reader.
  • Compliance management for FCC, ETSI, and other agency certifications.
  • Contract manufacturing management and QA compliance.
