Patient Tracking: Patient Care Technology Systems Announces Automatic Tracking Of 3 Million Patients
Patient Care Technology Systems (PCTS), a subsidiary of Consulier Engineering, Inc., recently announced that over three million emergency and surgical department patient encounters have been managed collectively by the company's automatic tracking customers since PCTS installed its first automatic tracking system in 2000. PCTS supports a national customer base of over 60 facilities and is a leading provider of emergency department information systems and automatic patient and asset tracking systems for emergency department, surgical service and enterprise-wide needs.
"We thank our customers for adopting automatic tracking software to help streamline patient care in their emergency and surgical services departments," said Tony Marsico, CEO of PCTS. "PCTS customers are thought leaders within the healthcare IT community and as early adopters of automatic tracking, their facilities are reaping the benefits of real-time communication of patient care status and more efficient department workflow."
Delaware-based Christiana Care Health System (Christiana Care) is one of PCTS' busiest automatic tracking customers. Together Christiana Care's two emergency departments treat approximately 150,000 patient visits each year. In 2004, Christiana Care implemented the Amelior EDTracker software from PCTS in the emergency department of Christiana Hospital. Early in 2006, Wilmington Hospital's emergency department implemented the emergency department automatic tracking system.
"Amelior EDTracker has revolutionized the way we work in our very busy emergency departments. My staff absolutely loves the system – they can not imagine how they ever functioned without it. Without a doubt, implementing Amelior EDTracker was one of the most significant initiatives we have undertaken in our EDs," said Linda Laskowski-Jones MS RN, vice president of emergency, trauma and aeromedical services at Christiana Care. "In addition to staff satisfaction, we have derived an objective return on investment (ROI) in terms of decreasing ED length of stay and patients who leave without treatment. We also have achieved gains in staff safety through encounter tracking and improved interdepartmental coordination of services and resources. The data from automatic tracking has led to highly effective performance improvement initiatives. Finally, the vendor support continues to meet our highest expectations."
Over the last decade, PCTS has brought several workflow automation innovations to the healthcare marketplace including Amelior EDTracker - the first automatic tracking software to measure interactions between patients, assets and staff to identify patient care milestones within the emergency department.
Amelior EDTracker is compatible with all leading locating technologies to support the range of locating requirements among healthcare providers. These include systems that use ultrasound, RFID, ultra-wideband and infrared light. Business process rules within the software utilize the location data to identify patient care milestones and to anticipate and facilitate progression to the next step in a caregiver's workflow. Movement and interactions trigger an evaluation of pre-determined rules and decides what, if anything, that interaction means in the context of the patient's status and department workflow. If an interaction was significant, additional software logic determines what to do next such as change a patient status, assign a task for the caregiver, or send a notification to a staff member.
The company, a pioneer in automatic patient and asset tracking software, continues to advance the workflow automation capabilities of its automatic patient and asset tracking solutions. Most recently, the company has integrated its automatic tracking software within its emergency department documentation system. Caregivers will benefit from a combination of workflow and clinical intelligence in the market's first automatic ED information system. As PCTS continues to push the technology forward, they will remain focused on transforming healthcare providers' operating performance and quality of practice through unique and innovative workflow solutions.
