Socket Mobile Launches Revolutionary Barcode Scanning Software Developer Kit
New SDK Allows Mobile Developers to Add Support for Both Built-In SmartPhone Cameras and Socket Bluetooth(R) Barcode Scanners to a Single Application
Newark, CA - (Marketwire) Socket Mobile, Inc. (NASDAQ: SCKT), an innovative provider of mobile productivity solutions, today announced the launch of a new Software Developer Kit (SDK) that supports both the Socket Bluetooth® Cordless Hand Scanner™ (CHS) along with software allowing the built-in smartphone camera -- such as those found on the Apple iPhone or Android device -- to function as a barcode reader.
"Until now, developers have had to choose to support either the built-in camera or a Bluetooth handheld device," said Mike Gifford, executive vice president at Socket Mobile. "If they chose to support the built-in camera, but later found that users needed more robust scanning with a dedicated barcode scanner, they had to re-write their application or support two sets of APIs. Our new SDK simplifies development of mobile applications from the start by allowing a migration path to higher performance scanners within the application. Not only does this significantly streamline development efforts, but it allows developers to reduce testing time, bring their solution to market faster, expand their user base, and provide a level of performance and comfort not available until this SDK release."
"Many of our customers incorporate barcodes in their workflow," said Sze Wong, chief executive officer at Zerion Software, creators of the iFormBuilder mobile platform. "Right now we have SDKs from both Socket and from the industry leader in built-in camera barcode scanning incorporated into our app. A move to consolidate the two will definitely help us simplify our codebase. So no matter how the barcodes are scanned, we can provide the same kind of data parsing. The fact this works across applications requiring QR codes for event check-in, 2D barcodes found on driver's licenses, and 1D barcodes used in equipment tracking and UPC codes is superb. This creates a revolutionary and highly versatile toolkit for developers."
The SocketScan 10 SDK with built-in camera support is available online by registering at http://developer.socketmobile.com ($19.95 annual subscription fee applies). Registered developers can choose between free web community support or paid support from Socket Mobile. Developers will also receive unique customer benefits, special offers, and discounts.
