StarPOS Launches New SM-S220i iOS-Compatible Bluetooth Printer

The new SM-S220i mobile printer, the latest addition to Star Micronics’ expanding range of mobile printers, is now available from The Printer Distribution Company’s (PDC) subsidiary, Star Point of Sale South Africa (StarPOS). StarPOS offers its customers a wide range of printing and POS solutions, and is the sole authorised distributor and long-standing partner of Star Micronics.

The SM-S220i has been developed in response to the rapidly growing demand for a mobile Bluetooth printer that is compatible with multiple operating systems (Windows, Android, Linux, iOS). It is Star’s first printer to be approved by Apple, and unlike most printers available today, the SM-S220i can pair directly with the Apple iPad, iPhone and iPod touch via Bluetooth. Compatibility with iOS is a result of Star’s investment in Apple’s MFi (Made for iPhone, iPad, iPod) certification. The SM-S220i also supports the Bluetooth SPP protocol that allows compatibility with other common operating systems.

Its ease-of-use is highlighted by its ability to simply switch from iOS support to Android, etc, thanks to front panel controls that allow configuration of the printer and selection of either MFi mode or SPP for all other operating systems. In addition to easy ‘Drop-In & Print’ paper loading and a print speed up to 80mm/second, the SM-S220i features an LCD display and convenient automatic sleep mode with an extended eight-hour battery life. The printer further benefits from dual RS232 ports, allowing pass-through communication to other devices such as NFC readers, cash drawers, Pin-Pads, etc (serial cable included in box).

With the option of a double-sided magnetic stripe reader and a range of accessories included in the box, the SM-S220i is a versatile mobile POS printer providing high functionality at minimal extra cost. And, in terms of design, its sleek silver and black case has been designed to complement the look of devices such as Apple’s iPad.

Furthermore, its compact and lightweight design, which supports two-inch (58mm) thermal paper, means this mobile printer is suitable for a wide variety of applications, from queue busting in retail and hospitality environments, to home delivery and warehousing applications. Payment processing devices can easily be attached to the SM-S220i through its accessory serial ports, making the printer very adaptable for any payment application.

Annette Tarlton, Marketing Director, Star Micronics EMEA, says: “As one of the first printers on the market with both iOS and Bluetooth SPP protocol, the SM-S220i is a high-quality mobile printer with exceptional functionality at minimal extra cost. Its versatility and design make this mobile printer ideal for a variety of applications and environments, allowing users to offer customers an efficient and personalised service without compromise.”

Frikkie Koegelenberg, Chief Commercial Officer at PDC, says the high quality and innovative technology offered by Star Micronics products are one of the main reasons that the two companies have enjoyed a long and successful partnership. “The SM-S220i delivers the excellence we have come to expect from Star, and will allow users of Apple devices to appreciate the benefits of ease-of-use that Star printers are known for.”
