Wall Street Journal Article Mentions RFID Tire Tags From Advanced ID Used By Goodyear
Advanced ID Corporation, a leading developer of radio frequency identification ("RFID") technology for livestock tracking, pet recovery and supply chain applications focusing on the tire management industry, recently announced that its RFID tire tags used by The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in tires manufactured for NASCAR racing was mentioned in an article published by The Wall Street Journal on November 1, 2007.
The article, "Tire Recalls Show Flaws in the System", references RFID technology as a solution for rectifying the currently faulty procedures surrounding automotive tire recalls which pose significant consumer safety risks. According to the story, there is no central database that allows a consumer to quickly match the numbers on the tire with the numbers in the recall notice. Consumers often aren't informed when a product is recalled, with an average of 28 recall notices for all consumer products announced each week. The failure of the tire recall system presently in place exposes car passengers to potentially life threatening driving conditions, and car/tire manufacturers, dealers and distributors to potentially expensive legal actions.
Dan Finch, President and CEO of Advanced ID, commented: "The Wall Street Journal article addresses the basic tenet behind the need for an RFID tire tag solution, which is intended to bring automated accountability to an extremely large and highly distributed market. RFID technology will enable market participants to inexpensively track tires for passenger safety precautions as well as provide for automotive industry administrative benefits."
"We believe that Advanced ID is the only technology company focusing on the tire industry," continued Mr. Finch. "Moreover, we have a significant first-mover advantage with nearly three years of successful testing of tires using our tags. Through our strategic relationships with Goodyear and Michelin, two of the world's leading tire companies, we are uniquely positioned to benefit from the obvious need of the tire industry to adopt an RFID solution."
Advanced ID has worked with Goodyear for over two years to develop an RFID tag that meets the challenging requirements of NASCAR racing and the Goodyear Racing Eagle and Wrangler tires used throughout the 2006 and 2007 NASCAR seasons which have had embedded Advanced ID tire tags.
In October 2007, the Company received its 3rd purchase order from Goodyear to provide the RFID tags embedded in all the racing tires used in the 2008 NASCAR season. The racing season includes the NEXTEL Cup, Busch Series and Craftsman Truck series races.
The tire tag solution from Advanced ID is based on proprietary RFID tag readers developed by the Company and RFID tag technology obtained through a licensing agreement with Michelin for its 915 MHz tire tag for the transportation industry. Advanced ID provides both the tire tag that is embedded in the tire during the tire curing (manufacturing) process and also the tire patch, which is cold vulcanized on the tire after manufacture. Both applications provide a life-of-tire, unique ID for the tire which can be used for inventory purposes, tire maintenance with the Company's Pneu-Logic tire inspection tools division, theft prevention, and as a resource in tire recall situations.
In assessing tire recall process, The Wall Street Journal article suggested that "radio frequency technology -- an automatic identification method that relies on storing and remotely retrieving data -- could allow better tracking." The story noted that "some tires used on commercial trucks and airplanes, as well as all those used in NASCAR races, have radio-frequency tags buried in them. Trucking companies use the system largely to alert them when a tire is old and needs to be changed, while NASCAR uses it to make sure racing teams return tires to manufacturers after each race, because NASCAR rules forbid the teams to keep the tires…With a system like that, a tire shop or car dealer could use a hand-held device or other scanning equipment to quickly check the identity of a tire. If linked to a database that allowed searches based on tire numbers, it could be done in seconds."
